Andy Rutledge

User Experience Designer

I'm a senior-level design professional steeped in the technical, emotional, and behavioral components to UX design. I specialize in solving big, complex challenges presented by media-rich websites and business-critical web apps. Additionally, I have leadership and management experience in a variety of industries and I'm also a lifelong multimedia artist. Mostly, though, I care about how design delights, affords, invites, and succeeds for the one using the product.

I'm a writer and aside from hundreds of articles for my own sites I have written many articles for design publications; both print and digital. Those publications include A List Apart, UX Mag, Smashing Magazine, .net Magazine (for which I wrote a column over several issues), and others. My articles are included in the course syllabus of design programs at dozens of colleges and universities.

Experience

Director of User Experience

Ascendio
2015 to 2018

I solved big-picture information architecture challenges as well as contextual-UX challenges for both our SaaS app (RaiseDonors) and our clients' content-rich websites. With our clients’ redesign projects I planned and conducted the discovery process, working directly with their teams to seek and define the objectives, constraints, and opportunities while immersing my understanding in their enterprise or ministry. I defined the project process and deadlines for our team and theirs. For non-project issues, I accomplished discrete IA and UX challenges as trouble tickets for our retainer clients. Aside from resolving design challenges, my goal was to help our clients get better at what they do.

UX Design Team Lead

Kalkomey Enterprises
2013 to 2015

I lead the UX and design teams at Kalkomey, overseeing all design and UX projects. In addition to leadership responsibilities I was part of one of the cross-disciplinary scrum teams, working in agile fashion, building and maintaining the many public-facing and client-facing products, courses, and tools that serve millions of people every year. While there, I created the branding guidelines and managed all of Kalkomey’s product brands and reconceived, redesigned, and rebuilt the company’s corporate website.

Co-Founder & Project Director

Unit Interactive
2007 to 2013

I managed our project pipeline, wrote proposals, accomplished client design & front-end development projects and oversaw the day-to-day running of the business. My team and I worked in an ongoing basis with Woot.com, Amazon.com, Furman.edu, TCU, Vector Media Group, and dozens of other large to small enterprises, with branding and website and application design and development. More than 70% of our clients were repeat or retainer clients.
